Korten was just such a book for me. It is easily the most important work in the sustainability literature since _Natural Capitalism_. By looking at the title, you may be saying to yourself, "This guy's against capitalism? What is he a Socialist? Communist?" The short answer is no he isn't. The slightly longer answer is that he advocates an economic system that is built around the needs of people and the needs of the natural environment. Because, as we who are involved in sustainability know, the two are inextricably linked. This concept goes beyond Socialism, Communism and most especially Capitalism because none of these philosophical/economic systems can incorporate the link between Nature and Humanity in any meaningful way. For the really long answer, you'll have to read the book. Much of what Korten has to say, and what I have to say in support of this book, may be perceived as simply un-American. The most important concept in Korten's book is that Capitalism is not American, does not lead to true wealth for anyone but the handful of world's super-rich (and even then, arguably not), and is not worthy of the idealistic, fundamentalist fervor that it currently receives. The basic premise of Korten's argument is that Capitalism has become a parasitic drain, a cancer, on the local and global economic systems as well as the natural systems upon which all life, including humans, depend. Corporations have gradually changed society's rules over the past few hundred years or so to the extent that they operate with all of the rights of living persons with few to none of the responsibilities. They have, in part, accomplished this by manipulating the "scientific" principles of economics to make the case that the free flow of capital and individual greed are social benefits. The primary economic theory used towards this end is that of Adam Smith in his work _The Wealth of Nations_. Korten very clearly shows how economists have manipulated and bastardized the five rules of Smith's "Invisible Hand" theory of commerce to the extent that the Capitalist system frequently cites them as being crucial to continued growth and prosperity while completely ignoring every single one of them. Further, the phrase "Invisible Hand" was not a central theme of Smith's work. It is mentioned once in passing within the text. If Adam Smith could see how his theories has been used to promote capitalism, he would be spinning in his grave. Korten's proposed solution to this suicidal economic system is to truly adhere to the five rules of a market economy as proposed by Adam Smith. Smith never intended his ideas to be applied to global monopolistic organizations with internal economies that rival those of many nations. He intended them to operate in the context of sustainable, localized, self-sufficient economies. Korten further proposes many policy reforms to be instituted at every level of government and shows how they fit into the overall vision of sustainability. Most notable is to simply not be overwhelmed by the seemingly insurmountable forces of the global Capitalist system and be paralyzed into inaction at the futility of the situation. Quite the contrary, Korten suggests simply not to participate in the system at all, or at least to the smallest extent that is possible. Capitalism needs the flow of money to survive. If enough individuals make choices in their lives to divert their money from a system that is hell-bent on the demise of the planet to a system that supports living systems and economies, Capitalism will be weakened and may eventually be replaced by such a system. In other words, the first and best thing one can do to replace Capitalism with something better is to adopt the principles of voluntary simplicity. The following quote from an article written by Korten illustrates how this can happen. David C. Nonetheless, the suicide economy continues to dominate our economic, political, social, and cultural lives. So how do we get from a few million living enterprises that are struggling to survive at the fringes of the global suicide economy to a healthy planetary system of thriving living economies? The answer is, "We grow it into being." "No one planned the suicide economy. It is what organizational consultant Margaret Wheatley calls an "emergent system." Those responsible for corporate interests grew it into being through their day-to-day effort to increase profits and market share. Step by step over the last several hundred years, they reshaped politics, the legal system, and modern culture to create the interlocking systems of interests and mutual obligations of what has become a suicide economy. "The complex, self-reinforcing dynamics of an emergent system make it virtually impossible to transform from within. Those who attempt to do so are almost invariably marginalized or expelled. When environmental writer Carl Frankel set out to write the book In Earth's Company on corporate environmentalism, he looked for true environmental champions within the corporate world. He found three. By the time his book was published, all three had been fired. "An emergent system that no longer serves can be displaced only by a more powerful emergent system. According to Wheatley, "This means that the work of change is to start over, to organize new local efforts, connect them to each other, and know that their values and practices can emerge as something even stronger."" ... In chapter 11, Korten quotes the work of a researcher named Paul Ray that shows that there may already be momentum within the U.S. in this direction. Ray's work suggests that 24% of American adults may be committed to the values of what he calls "Cultural Creatives." Further, this number may turn out to be much larger in practice because large percentages of people who live their lives as "Modernists" (materialistic capitalists) and "Heartlanders" (traditional American rural family and religious values) would likely convert to the Cultural Creatives if the knew that this cultural option existed and was a viable option. If Ray's observations are true, they offer the profound insight that there very may be a silent and unrecognized majority, even by themselves, of people who would willingly reject Capitalism and embrace a living economy.
