Dr. Charles L. Liotta, Vice Provost for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies, Executive Director of the Institute for Sustainable Technology and Development for the Georgia Institute of Technology, joined the Georgia Tech faculty as an Assistant Professor in 1965. He has risen through the ranks and, in 1997; he was made a Regents' Professor, which he holds concurrent with the Vice Provost and Executive Director positions. Dr. Liotta received his B.S. in Chemistry from Brooklyn College and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Maryland.

As the Vice Provost for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies, Dr. Liotta guides the investment of research resources and nurtures the development of researchers and their programs. His Office of Research and Graduate Studies oversees the administration of a research enterprise expending over $425 million annually for FY'05. His management team supports interdisciplinary program development, manages the business processes for the research funding, and invests in world-class research facilities, federal relations and international research and graduate study collaborations. His responsibilities include programs to attract high quality faculty and graduate students to Georgia Tech, and assure that their innovations become realities in the global market place.

Dr. Liotta is a synthetic physical organic chemist whose major interests lie in the areas of structure-property relationships, kinetics and mechanisms of organic reactions, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis (phase transfer catalysis and fluorous biphasic chemistry), molecular thermodynamics and solution theory, phase equilibria, reactions and processes in supercritical and near critical fluids, effect of high pressure and temperature on solution behavior, separation processes, development of environmentally benign chemicals and chemical processes, synthesis and properties of new and novel polymeric materials. He is currently collaborating with Professor Charles Eckert (Chemical Engineering) and their collective research groups presently consists of six graduate students and two post-doctoral associates in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry and twelve graduate students and four post-doctoral associate in the School of Chemical Engineering.

During the past forty years, Dr. Liotta has been invited to present over 350 research seminars at various universities, colleges, chemical companies, symposia, professional meetings (ACS), Gordon Conferences, etc. in North America, Europe, Africa and Asia. He has authored over 160 research publications. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and of Alpha Chi Sigma Professional Fraternity. Currently he is a consultant for E. I. DuPont de Nemours and Company (over 34 years), Milliken Research Corporation (over 36 years) and the American Pacific Corporation (over 5 years).

Dr. Liotta has been the recipient of a number of Georgia Tech awards, including an Outstanding Teacher Award in 1971, an Outstanding Faculty Award (Student Government) in 1972, an Outstanding Faculty Award (Interfraternity Council) in 1994, and an Outstanding Service Award in 1995. He also received a Sigma Xi Research Award from the Georgia Tech Chapter of Sigma Xi in 1982. He is an honorary member of the Omicron Delta Kappa and the Phi Kappa Phi fraternities. In 1994, he was appointed a Joint Professor of Chemical Engineering in the School of Chemical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was also the recipient of the Presidential Green Chemistry Award for 2004 and recipient of the Malcolm E. Pruitt Award for 2005.

Dr. Liotta is on the Board of Governors for the following organizations: Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL), EMTech Biosciences, and Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), The MACARO Sustainability Center at the University of Pittsburgh and the Environmental Improvement Committee for the American Chemical Society.

Tina Guldberg's responsibilities as the associate director of corporate programs include proposal writing for new sponsored research, mentoring students with their research, and providing continuity and direction for long-term corporate partnerships.

Guldberg is a graduate from the University of Michigan's College of Engineering. She began her career as a product development engineer at Ford Motor Company and worked on a variety of programs during her seven years with Ford including: Manufacturing and Assembly, Car Programs Management, and Advanced Vehicle Systems Engineering.

Her current interests are working with faculty and students to develop innovative new methodologies and decision support tools that enable corporations to increase their competitiveness by enhancing resource (material, financial, and social) productivity, capturing new business opportunities, and fostering more sustainable operations. She also serves as the advisor to the GT Net Impact chapter.

Martha Lindsay

Administrative Manager

Martha Lindsay serves as Administrative Manager for ISTD. She has been at Georgia Tech since March 1983 and with ISTD since July 1999. Lindsay handles all budget development and financial activities, departmental state accounts, sponsored accounts, and Georgia Tech Foundation accounts. She also analyzes the department's budgetary expenditures and needs.

Brent Verrill

Brent Verrill's responsibilities as project coordinator include the administration of the ISTD Web site and listserve, assisting student employees with their research, and providing continuity and direction for longer term projects. Verrill recently graduated from Georgia Tech with a Master's of Science in Industrial Design. For two of his three-and-a-half years at Georgia Tech, Brent was a graduate research assistant at ISTD. He also served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for two semesters in the Industrial Design department. His bachelor's degree is from the University of Miami in Music Engineering. His previous career was as a video engineer specializing in videowalls and projection display systems for trade shows, corporate events, and film and television. Verrill's current interests are in energy issues, alternative and sustainable architecture, sustainable product design, and heirloom furniture design and fabrication using sustainable materials and processes.
